Earlier there was a system called highly skilled Migrant programme allowing only skilled worker to migrate in to UK for jobs and self employment .From Nov 2006 point based Tier-1 phased out the HSMP system.
Point based system/tier (PBS)
Based on the categories of immigrants PBS is fixed in to 5 tier frame works.
- Highly skilled professionals to lead the country in prosperity.
- Skilled labors to supplement the ongoing work force.
- limited opportunities for low skilled workers to compensate temporary labour shortages.
- Student population to boost the academic projects.
- Youth mobility and temporary labour shortages.
- Youth mobility and temporary workers: - people are allowed to work in the UK for a short spam keeping in view on satisfying non-economic objectives.
TIER-I VISA overview (general)
Skilled professionals play a vital role to keep the country economically stable. Since 2002 the UK has been actively encouraging skilled migrants under HSMP. Now been replaced by Tier -I (general) visa on 30 th June 2008.
Specific Criteria:-Following tabulated data shows the point specific criteria. A minimum of 75 score is mandatory.

Previous Earnings:-
Previous earnings are calculated on the basis of Sterling , British (pounds) and then sterling figures are counted as points.

- 23,000-25,999 20
- 26,000-28,999 25
- 29,000-31,999 30
- 32,000-34,999 35
- 35,000-39,999 40
- 40,000... 45
Age: - More the younger you are, more the points you can score.
Experience:-
Previous Earnings and Qualifications gained in UK -5 points.
English Language proficiency:-
Applicant should have either one of the following.
- IELTS band score of 6.5 is mandatory.
- Applicant coming from English speaking countries likes Australia , Newzealand , Canada , Jamaica , St Lucia , USA etc.
- Applicant having taken degree taught in English from the above said countries.
- "UKNARIC" certified degrees can satisfy the English language requirement.
Valid proof of one of these criteria will earn you 10 points for English language requirement.
Maintenance:
An original bank statement on official letter head with official stamp of organization. The amount should be in the account at least for 3 months. Prior to the process of application.
Extensions:-Immigrants already on HSMP can extend their stay by qualifying in Tier-1 system should get 75 points. English language requirement is waved for them.
