Sweden i s a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe . Sweden has land borders with Norway to the west and Finland to the north east and it is connected to Denmark by the Öresund Bridge in the south.
At 450,000 km 2 (173,746 sq mi), Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union in terms of area, and it has a total population of about 9.2 million. Sweden has a low population density of 21 people per km² (53 per sq mi), but with a considerably higher density in the southern half of the country. About 85% of the population lives in urban areas, and it is expected that these numbers will gradually rise as a part of the ongoing urbanization. [10] Sweden's capital is Stockholm , which is also the largest city in the country (population of 1.3 million in the urban area and with 2 million in the metropolitan area). The second and third largest cities are Gothenburg and Malmö .
Universities:
There are a number of different universities and colleges in Sweden , the oldest and largest of which are situated in Uppsala , Lund , Gothenburg and Stockholm . Only a few countries such as Canada , the United States and Japan have higher levels of tertiary education degree holders. Along with several other European countries, the government also subsidizes tuition of international students pursuing a degree at Swedish institutions, although there has been talk of this being changed.

With few exceptions, all higher education in Sweden is publicly funded. The listing includes the officially recognized independent higher education institutions that operate under contract with the Swedish Ministry of Education, Research and Culture .
